John Mitchell
Al Hooks had already befriended John and had told me a little about him and his eccentricities. I met him for the first time when he led Al and me toward Owen Street around the corner from his shop. He led the parade with his arms dangling close to his sides with very little movement of them. He seemed to be moving in slow motion yet kept his pace in front of us as he began to climb Owen with the same momentum. It was only a few steps for me to yell out that I would wait at the bottom. A short while later, without missing cadence, John Mitchell turned around and said, "Ha-rumph! That's a change, I'm leading the Pack!"
It was then that I knew I would like him.
On follow up visit, he showed some of his vast display of retail inventory stuck in many different pockets and crannies. I asked him how long since he arrived and why did he move to Eureka Springs. He said, "Not that I show it," with a pinched smile, "but, I came with the Hippy Crowd."
On yet another trip he supplied wine glasses and brought me outside where he stepped off a few paces into center of the street where he explained that a Honeymoon couple was being driven by carriage when all of a sudden, the horse pulled driver and carriage all the way to John's front door where Bernie keeps watch. He uttered, "I could have charged Stud Services!"
I then asked him, "Are you certain that your horse is really Bernie and not Bernice?"
